How Genes Affect Lung Cancer

Genes play a significant role in the development of lung cancer. Lung cancer is a complex disease influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and each type has different genetic characteristics. Genetic Susceptibility: Inherited Risk Factors: Some individuals have an increased risk of developing lung cancer due to inherited genetic mutations. For example, mutations in certain genes, such as EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor), ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase), and others, have been associated with an elevated risk of developing lung cancer. Somatic Mutations: Driver Mutations: Lung cancer is often associated with specific genetic mutations known as driver mutations. These mutations drive the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells.
