Uterine Fibroid Embolisation: Have You Heard About It?

Yes, I'm familiar with Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). UFE is a medical procedure used to treat uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. The procedure is also known as uterine artery embolization. During UFE, a radiologist uses a catheter to deliver small particles (usually made of plastic or gelatin) to block the blood vessels that supply blood to the fibroids. By cutting off the blood supply, the fibroids shrink and symptoms such as pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and frequent urination can be alleviated. UFE is considered a less invasive alternative to surgical options such as hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and myomectomy (removal of the fibroids). It is generally associated with shorter recovery times and fewer complications compared to surgery.
